Flemish Region – new developments concerning PFAS soil contamination
On 26 November 2024, advancements concerning PFAS soil contamination were unveiled in the Flemish Region. The OVAM has revised its guidelines, encompassing updates on PFAS-suspected activities, directives for PFAS investigations, protocols for preliminary soil investigations, and the Code of good practice for descriptive soil investigations.

- Revised directives for PFAS investigations: These new guidelines refine the identification of PFAS as a suspect compound in statutory soil assessments, effective from 1 February 2025, ensuring thorough evaluation and remediation processes.
- Enhanced preliminary soil investigation protocols: Establishing a standard procedure for preliminary assessments, the protocol ensures decision-making in areas where PFAS presence is suspected.
- New code of good practice for descriptive investigations: While maintaining core principles, this updated Code addresses considerations for PFAS-contaminated soils, supplementing existing methodologies.
