Step back in the sustainability-push for forced co-ownership
On 3 April 2025, the federal Belgian legislator amended a draft law seeking to address sustainability in forced co-ownership, building on the initial proposal from September 2023. The complexity of decision-making and financial constraints in co-ownership associations are still identified as major obstacles to promoting energy efficiency initiatives.
The initial draft law proposed ambitious measures such as mandatory multi-year maintenance plans, the right for co-ownership associations to enter loans, and updated decision-making processes, while current draft law provides minor adjustments to the current legal regime.
