Overview

Javier is a tax partner and the head of the Tax department in Madrid. He has extensive experience advising on the taxation aspects of mergers and acquisitions, capital markets transactions and restructurings. His expertise also includes the analysis and structuring of complex financial products, corporate transactions and joint ventures. His clients are major corporations, investment banks and private equity houses.

Javier is ranked by both of the main legal directories, Chambers and Legal 500, as a leading individual in tax, highlighting highly his experience in assisting with the tax structuring of high-impact transactions.   • Advising Tensile Capital Management and Portobello Capital on the tax aspects of the acquisition of petrol station operator Plenoil.
  • Advising Ardian and the minority shareholders on the tax aspects of the transfer to CVC Capital Partners of Monbake, one of the largest companies producing frozen dough in Spain, with a presence in over 30 countries.
  • Advising Permira on the tax aspects of the €2.2bn sale to EQT of a majority stake in Universidad Europea, one of the largest private university groups in Spain.
  • Advising Banco Sabadell on the tax aspects of the sale of an 80% stake in its payment’s subsidiary to Nexi Group and on a strategic agreement for merchant acquiring services.
  • Advising Portobello on the tax aspects of their investments and divestments in Spain such as on the acquisition of a stake in Eurocebollas and in Condis, and on its sale of Evolutio Business Connectivity to Lyntia Networks.
  • Advising Q-Energy on all tax aspects of the setting up and fund raising of its fifth fund for €2.4bn.

Education and qualifications

Javier has a degree in Law from ICADE University - E1 (1991-1996) and has a Master's degree in Tax Law from the Garrigues Business Training Center (1996-1997)
