PFAS contamination in the Flemish region: subsidies for descriptive soil investigations

Since 1 February 2025, the Flemish Region has implemented a co-financing possibility  for descriptive soil investigations for PFAS contamination resulting from firefighting activities and fire extinguishing exercises. This initiative is an important step towards supporting landowners, users, and operators in addressing environmental contamination.

Key components of this programme include:

  • Co-financing rates are varied: 35% for enterprises, 50% for non-enterprise organisations other than natural persons, and 95% for natural persons, with a personal contribution cap of 500 euros.
  • Eligibility and Documentation: Eligible parties must provide documentation of property ownership or use, as well as evidence of responsibility and pre-financing for decontamination efforts.
  • Exclusions and Limitations: Certain costs and types of investigations are excluded from co-financing. Eligible investigations must have been ordered post-21 September 2021, with invoices dated within four years prior to application.
  • Funding Limits: OVAM imposes a maximum funding cap of 300,000 euros per application, with a cumulative limit over a three-year period.
