Overview

Hansel has significant experience advising clients on complex cross-border and time sensitive disputes, with a particular expertise in navigating shareholder and joint venture disputes, including day-to-day advice on the administration of joint ventures whilst shareholders are in dispute. An arbitration specialist, Hansel has acted for clients under many of the well-known international arbitration rules, including the International Court of Arbitration (ICC) Rules, Hong Kong International Centre (HKIAC) Rules, Singapore International Arbitration Centre (SIAC) Rules and London Court of International Arbitration (LCIA) Rules, as well as in enforcement mandates before various courts.

Hansel regularly works in close collaboration with lawyers from the firm’s other market-leading practice areas on disputes and related risks, particularly the firm’s Restructuring and Insolvency (R&I) practice on contentious insolvency mandates, including legal proceedings arising from contentious distressed situations.  

Based in Singapore, Hansel trained with the firm in London and previously spent four years as an associate in the firm’s London Dispute Resolution practice. 

Hansel has also spent time in the firm’s Shanghai office. As a fluent Mandarin speaker, Hansel maintains an active practice in disputes involving Chinese parties.

Hansel is qualified in Singapore, New York and England & Wales.

Work highlights

Hansel’s recent experience includes:

  • Representing a Chinese SOE on a c.US$1.2bn HKIAC arbitration over a shareholder dispute on a joint venture based in the African continent, involving enforcement proceedings before the Hong Kong SAR and British Virgin Island (BVI) courts.
  • Representing an Asia Pacific-based joint venture on an ICC arbitration seated in England, arising out of a dispute regarding the terms of an Affiliation Agreement. 
  • Representing a leading PRC-based medical supplies group on an HKIAC arbitration seated in Hong Kong arising out of a shareholders’ dispute.
  • Representing the Southeast Asian joint venture client in a c.US$300m ICC arbitration over the applicable gas price to a gas sales agreement, arising from a price increase imposed by the Indonesian State.
  • Advising an international bank on a cross-border financial fraud claim in excess of US$120m, in which we obtained worldwide freezing orders and receivership orders from the Singapore Court against a politically exposed person (PEP) and a group of companies, which were subsequently enforced in various other jurisdictions.
  • Advising an international fund in a post-acquisition dispute arising out of the sale of several mineral manufacturing assets in Thailand.
  • Representing a major Southeast Asian bank on an exit dispute with its bancassurance partner, which included an expert determination process. 
  • Representing a Chinese textile conglomerate on its contentious restructuring negotiations with an ad hoc group of bondholders, which included urgent litigation (including interim relief) before the English High Court over the validity of the appointment of the Bond Trustee. 
  • Advising Yuzhou Group on its successful schemes of arrangement sanctioned in the Hong Kong and Cayman courts.

Hansel is a member of the International Centre for Dispute Resolution (ICDR) Greater China Committee. 

Hansel maintains an active interest in public law issues in Singapore, and is a member of the Singapore Law Society’s Public and International Law Committee.

Education and qualifications

Hansel studied law at Trinity College, Cambridge University, and completed his LL.M. at the New York University School of Law. 

Hansel is fluent in English and Mandarin.
