Public advocacy

Our public advocacy team provides legal advice to clients on their engagement with government, parliamentarians, regulators and the media

We support clients whether they are growing, entering new markets, executing a transaction, experiencing change to their existing market or facing a crisis situation. As government plays an increasing role in shaping the business and economic environment, whether due to Covid-19, climate change, global inequality, geopolitics or other reasons, effective engagement with it is more important than ever.

Policy and legislative

We can assist clients by monitoring policy, legislation and regulation, including the progress of Bills, consultations, Parliamentary inquiries, Parliamentary questions and debates. Our team has a wealth of experience advising clients in relation to proposed legislation and regulation. We can help with drafting amendments to this, as well as with responding to consultations and crafting communications to policy makers.

Parliamentary committee hearings and public inquiries

We can help with all aspects of preparation for select committees, congressional committees and public inquiries, including drafting written evidence, preparing to give oral evidence and advising on the process and legal powers of these bodies.

Our London team includes Alison Saunders, the former Director of Public Prosecution for England & Wales, who has extensive experience of preparing for and appearing at Parliamentary select committees, and Jonathan Jones, former Treasury Solicitor (the most senior legal official in the UK government) with decades of experience of advising ministers, preparing legislation, setting up public inquiries and giving evidence to parliamentary committees.

Stakeholder mapping and trade associations

We can assist clients with stakeholder mapping to identify key policy-makers and influencers and develop strategies for engaging with them. We regularly participate in and advise trade associations, contributing to the policy-making process. This provides an industry-wide perspective and adds to our knowledge of the markets our clients operate in and the key players within them.

Strategic communications

We can help clients develop communications aimed at policy makers and the media that are legally robust while also being clear and compelling. Where applicable, we work closely with your public affairs and communications advisors to ensure that messaging is consistent with your overall communication strategy and to maximise impact.
